Mental Health and Self Care for Parents

As a parent you have multiple responsibilities you need to care for in a day. Being a care taker is not an easy job, though filled with many joys, it can leave you exhausted and depleted without the right self-care. Prioritizing your needs before others does not come easy for most parents. However, you can not fill a cup from an empty vessel. Remember to breathe and take care of yourself so that you can also take care of others who need you. Here are some tips to help you get through your day:

Get Some Rest

Your day is full of things to do and you’re always on the go. Make sure you get a good night's rest to prepare for your day. It may help to start your children's bed time routine at 8:00p or 9:00p and allot a hour total for all task to be completed. Ensure you are in bed by 10:30p or 11:00p to give your self enough hours of rest before you begin a new day.

Drink Water and Eat

Rest is a great way to let your body recharge, however, to keep the fuel going you'll need to ensure you are well nourished and hydrated. Don't forget to drink water, and have a full meal at least twice a day with small snacks in between. Set a timer on your phone to help you remember. You can also, fix adult portions or versions of your kid's meal to cut down on time. Remember to take care of yourself so you can take care of others.

Find Support

You might feel lonely or that you have no help. Connecting with others such as a parent groups, family, or friends can create a great network of support to help you through your child's journey. Do not be afraid to ask for help, use the resources available to you.

Take a Break

Parenting is a full-time job but we all need time for ourselves. It's important to know how to bring joy into your own life through your own actions. Set an alarm for yourself before everyone wakes up or take time for yourself after everyone is asleep. Have some coffee, tea, or water and relax. Read a book or watch your favorite show on television. If that's not an option for you, have your significant other have the children for a little while so you have that break at least two days a week. Things can get overwhelming, even a five minute break to yourself will get you back on track. Take up a hobby, exercise or go for a walk. Take the time to recharge and invest back in yourself so you can fully invest in the lives of others.
