Children with autism may be diagnosed with co-morbid disorders, including speech delay. Communication support systems can be used to assist children and adults to express their wants and needs, more effectively. An inability to communicate one's wants and needs can at times result in displays of maladaptive behavior. For example, a child may hit a parent when hungry, as in the past hitting has resulted in the parent giving attention to the child and attempting to find out "what's wrong". The following are a few commonly used applications and tools that help support a child's ability to communicate with the individuals they interact with on a daily basis. Always consult with a speech therapist, as well as, a BCBA to establish an effective communication and behavior management plan for your child.
